Dear Cottonwood Union School District Community,

In three short years with the efforts of our dedicated and hardworking school communities we have much to celebrate in our Local Control Accountability Plan's actions and services. These accomplishments represent some of the best research-based educational practices, tools and systems to offer the best education for your children. Despite state, possible significant federal cuts in funding for education along with a host of other detracting factors we are facing I want to encourage our school community to work together to make the next three year LCAP plan another powerful continuous improvement tool to ensure our students receive a quality educational program and support. As we move forward let's take the time to celebrate the following accomplishments from the last three years:


Goal 1: Increase Academic Proficiency & Support Student Learning (Ensure all students are college and career ready)

Common Core & Guaranteed and Viable Instruction and Curriculum

  • State Prescribed Adequate Instructional Minutes: 150 minutes K-3 and 120 minutes 4-8 for ELA and 60 minutes K-8 for math five days a week.
  • Adopted and implemented new ELA and math curriculum
  • ELA and math intervention system to serve ALL students
  • Intervention curriculum for English Language Arts and Mathematics
  • Increased amount of resource teacher time
  • Increased number of instructional assistants to support small group support
  • Hired additional teachers to decrease class sizes and increase amount of service to students
  • 1:1 Chromebooks 2nd through 8the grade and Chromebook carts in Kinder & 1st grades.
  • Increased advisory period time and academic support for all students
  • Established extended opportunities to learn including after school tutoring and a new summer program in partnership with the YMCA
  • Data-driven district-wide plan to deliver intervention and enrichment services for all students
  • Response to Intervention Model (academic and behavior) for all students
  • District-wide assessment matrix (with benchmarks) and establish assessment baselines


  • Professional Learning Communities
  • Instructional, Curriculum, Assessment & Intervention coaches and Assistant Principal: primarily responsible for Instructional, Curriculum, Assessment & Intervention
  • Established new preschool in a partnership with the YMCA
  • Weekly collaborative day (minimum days twice a month)
  • Provided 3 additional teacher days in summer for site continuous school improvement
  • Reestablished and expanded professional development


Goal 2: Increase Effective Communication / Connectedness and Promote a Positive Culture / Climate

  • Improved student success through parent involvement.
  • Provided resources for effective parent involvement
  • Established site and district level leadership teams and Professional Learning Communities
  • Reestablished electives and extra curriculum activities at sites
  • Updated technology and tools to assist in communications with staff and parents


Goal 3: Provide a Safe and Well-Maintained Facilities Ensure quality district facilities

  • Created a sustainable long range facilities and maintenance plan
  • Developed a 3-year deferred maintenance plan to restore and maintain facilities
  • Explored facilities utilization through the development and implementation of 7/11 committee to surplus campus and property
  • School Safety Plans at each site
  • Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) at all campuses
  • Capturing Kids Heart practices at each campus
  • Worked in collaboration with multiple agencies to reestablish Crowley Gulch Creek for education, recreation and community use.
  • Multiple projects and repairs have been accomplished at both sites (see yearly Celebrations link)

District Development

  • Developed and implemented a district strategic plan (including Local Accountability Plan (LCAP) and Local Education Agency Plan (LEAP) based on effective school research to ensure school system supports all students’ learning
  • Established a model for continuous school improvement
  • Expanded professional development through book studies, training, conferences, workshops, and benchmarked proven practices and model for all staff
  • Developed a model for collaboration and professional learning communities
  • Ensure fiscal stability and stewardship to support student achievement and long term stability
  • Continued to refined Human Resources practices including the recruitment, hiring and retention of highly quality employees
  • Successful negotiations with bargaining units
  • Implemented Golden Handshake to benefit employer and employee goals
